Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This atmospheric western stars Tom Hanks as Jefferson Kidd, a post-Civil War captain journeying through Texas, reading newspapers aloud to illiterate locals. When he befriends a mute child (Helena Zengel), he learns that she was separated from her family and raised by her Native American captors, and takes it upon himself to deliver her to relatives across the treacherous plains. With this adaptation of the novel by Paulette Jiles, director Paul Greengrass has fashioned an evocative, stunningly photographed tale that stays faithful to many of the genre's conventions. Hanks delivers a reserved, thoughtful performance, bringing the expected heft to a role tailor-made for him, yet it's the ethereal, wide-eyed Zengel who proves most striking.
