Invaders from Mars

Invaders from Mars

William Cameron Menzies (1953)

A Certificate

Our Score
William Cameron Menzies helped to design Gone with the Wind and directed Things to Come, and his Martian menace fairy tale has achieved cult status because of its distorted sets and abstract surrealism. Yes, you can see the zippers on the aliens' suits, and, yes, the paranoia scares are strictly kids' stuff, but that's precisely why this pulp science-fiction nightmare has built up a following. It perfectly depicts, from a child's point of view, the ultimate horror of having no one to trust and nowhere to turn - a fear that will strike a chord of recognition in anyone who's ever trembled behind the living-room sofa.

A boy sees a flying saucer land near his house, and soon afterwards, his father undergoes a disturbing personality change. The youngster realises that aliens have arrived on Earth and are brainwashing people to do their bidding, but faces a struggle to convince the authorities of the danger. Sci-fi thriller, with Jimmy Hunt and Helena Carter.
