Arthur Crabtree (1948)

A Certificate

Our Score
British cinema was heavily dependent on the mysteries of Edgar Wallace in the early talkie era. Few of these creaky thrillers were ever remade, until someone at Gainsborough Productions felt the need to bring this veritable stage warhorse under starter's orders for a second time. It's all clipped accents and impossibly earnest hamming from the off, as trainer Greta Gynt tries to prove that owner John McCallum didn't throw a race to improve the odds of his horse at a later Ascot meeting. Director Arthur Crabtree injects precious little tension, but fans of Dick Francis may find it amusing.

The favourite for the big race is nobbled and suspicion falls on the owner. His secret admirer proves it wasn't him.
