Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Nathan Grossman's up-close account of Swedish teen Greta Thunberg begins on a solar-powered, carbon-neutral yacht, as she eschews air travel to sail to New York for the UN Climate Action Summit. It's just the start of a film that provides a vital, intimate portrait of an outwardly ordinary young woman whose singular focus on the climate emergency saw her catapulted onto the world stage in 2018, when she skipped school to protest outside Swedish parliament. Home video shows a childhood full of toys and holidays, until Greta demanded her groovy parents reduce their carbon footprint. Now, she inspires millions, despite being cruelly targeted by right-wing American news outlets. There's no doubting that Thunberg's is a unique story that is both politically and emotionally stirring, which is perhaps why Grossman allows it to speak almost entirely for itself. His straightforward yet utterly compelling documentary invites us into the life of a remarkable teenager who is sure to accomplish even more remarkable things in the years to come.
