Screenwriter Tamzin Rafn's fixation with Emily Lloyd in David Leland's Wish You Were Here (1987) is evident throughout this spirited if unfocused rites-of-passage tale. Downton Abbey's Jessica Brown Findlay takes on the Lloyd mantle as wise-before-her-years teenager Emelia, who counters her boredom by embarking on an affair with an older man (Sebastian Koch) in a seaside town. Coasting on the success of his first novel, Koch's character has writer's block and exploits Emelia's literary aspirations to entice her into an affair behind the back of his hotelier wife (Julia Ormond). However, it's only a matter of time before the truth emerges and jeopardises Emelia's friendship with her lover's studious daughter (Felicity Jones). There are few surprises in Niall MacCormick's debut feature, but a trip to Oxford has its amusing moments. Brown Findlay also succeeds in matching Lloyd in combining physical precocity with a psychological vulnerability, which is most poignantly demonstrated in her scenes with her doting grandfather (Peter Vaughan).

Bookish teenager Beth is desperate to escape her dull home life. She finds a kindred spirit in Emelia, a troubled 17-year-old with dreams of becoming a writer, who comes to work at her parents' hotel. Emelia forms a friendship with Beth, but also has an affair with her father, which threatens to tear the family apart. Drama, with Jessica Brown Findlay, Felicity Jones, Sebastian Koch and Julia Ormond.
