Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Sidney Poitier's first film as director is a lively reworking of the wagon train set-up. Poitier also stars as the leader of a group of slaves, freed after the American Civil War, making their way through the wilderness despite harassment by white night riders trying to take them back to the plantations. Among the mainly black cast, Harry Belafonte gives real edge to the role of a conman preacher who eventually finds his moral integrity. This is one of those rare movies in which the "Indians", rather than the cowboys, ride to the rescue.
