Director Christian Petzold reunites the stars from 2018's Transit for this unusual yet enchanting romantic drama. Paula Beer plays Undine, a museum guide and an expert in Berlin's urban history, whose reaction to being dumped by her jack-the-lad lover is to promise lethal retribution. That might seem the cue for a Fatal Attraction-style course of action, however there's more going on here than meets the eye, especially when an encounter with amiable professional diver Christoph (Franz Rogowski) begins to reveal Undine's hidden depths. As the couple embark on a passionate affair, Petzold deftly allows the German fable of the water nymph (known in myth as an "undine") to colour their love story. However, the supernatural overtones never overwhelm the flow of events, and Beer and Rogowski give moving, believable performances.
