Robert Mitchum appears in an unfamiliar role, playing an ageing small-time gangster and cynical police informer who is relentlessly pursued by the mobsters he has betrayed. In a quality cast, Peter Boyle stands out as the hitman and so-called "friend" who's given the job of eliminating Mitchum. Peter Yates, the British director who forged his Hollywood reputation with the incredible car chase in the Oscar-winning Bullitt, gives this crime drama a more subtle tone, turning the story into a fable about urban violence. This was an important performance by Mitchum in terms of his career, with his subsequent characters often displaying the same distinctive world-weary outlook on life.

Eddie's friends are numerous, but the term friends is suspect. As a small time hood Eddie is about to go back to jail. In order to escape this fate he deals information on stolen guns to the feds. Simultaneously he is supplying arms to his bank robbing/kidnapping hoodlum chums. But who else is dealing with the feds? Who gets the blame for snitching on the bank robbers?
