Review

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Directly following on from the original movie (the first sequel was a stand-alone adventure), Casper Van Dien's Colonel Johnny Rico returns to squash more giant bugs with the help of high-powered mechanical suits. And he detrimentally brings his straight-to-DVD action man reputation with him. Ed Neumeier (who wrote all three episodes) marks his awkward directing debut with this cheese-ball nonsense, a jumble of cut-price battles, double-crosses, outer-space explosions, "surprise" twists, nude scenes, flesh-ripping and reduced-to-clear special effects. Anything good from Robert A Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel has long since been wrung out of the franchise, the brutal satire and political angles so successfully mined by director Paul Verhoeven in the first fun outing now replaced by heavy-handed religious allegory. An astonishing scene has the Lord's Prayer reverentially recited over one monster arachnid skirmish. It's funny, but, one suspects, not in the way the film-makers intended.
