The Boulting brothers' film adaptation of Kingsley Amis's comic masterpiece misses the subtle nuances, barbed satire and deliciously sly characterisation of the book, but still makes for surprisingly agreeable entertainment. Ian Carmichael gives a good account of himself as Jim Dixon, the disaster-prone lecturer whose career in the red-bricked halls of academe gets off to the worst possible start. But it's those masters of comic support Hugh Griffith and Terry-Thomas who are bang on form.
Summary
A hard-drinking, unconventional junior lecturer is frustrated with his stuffy university, but still wants to curry favour with the formidable head of the history department. A family gathering and an academic ceremony provide opportunities to make an impression - but nothing goes to plan. Comedy based on Kingsley Amis's novel, starring Ian Carmichael, Terry-Thomas and Hugh Griffith.
