Review

Vastly superior to Julien Duvivier's 1939 (La Charrette) remake, Victor Sjöström's eerie adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf's novel about the feckless husband whose 11th-hour redemption spares him the onerous duty of soul-taking is one of the key films in the development of expressionist cinema. The sermon on the demon power of drink could have come from a DW Griffith short. But Sjöström's inspired use of superimposition and time frames is infinitely more sophisticated. Indeed, it was a little too ingenious, as he was forced to simplify the structure to make the various flashbacks and visions more accessible for contemporary audiences.
