Our Score
At every turn of his Oscar-winning script, Frederic Raphael invites us to admire just how clever he's been in dissecting the shallowness of celebrity and the gullibility of the public. Yet no matter how much we want to resist falling under the spell of such a self-congratulatory piece of work, there's no denying that this is both an astute snapshot of a moment in time and a wicked insight into the national character that still has relevance today. Julie Christie thoroughly merited her Oscar as the immoral but vivacious starlet hellbent on fame and Dirk Bogarde as her TV journalist lover is equally splendid.

Julie Christie plays the part of Darling in this story of a stylish amoral model. There are three men in her life, each of whom willingly or involuntarily helps her on her way to the top.
