Our Score
Jodie Foster won her first best actress Oscar for her moving performance here as Sarah Tobias, the brash working-class waitress who is gang raped in a bar and then endures public scrutiny so her attackers and those who watched can be brought to justice. Jonathan Kaplan's controversial movie raised a storm of protest on its release from those who believed its content veered too close to gratuitous voyeurism - yes, the rape scene is explicit and designed to shock. But both Foster and Kelly McGillis, as the crusading lawyer, are superb and the film raises some pointed questions about an emotive subject.

A down-at-heel waitress vows to bring to justice the gang who raped her in a small-town bar - but is shocked when her attackers are given a light sentence. Determined not to be beaten, she persuades the district attorney to prosecute the men who watched the attack but did nothing to stop it. Drama, starring an Oscar-winning Jodie Foster, with Kelly McGillis, Bernie Coulson, Leo Rossi and Woody Brown.
