Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Based on the Arthur C Clarke short story Breaking Strain, this science-fiction drama could be described as Hitchcock's Lifeboat in space. When a cargo spaceship on a routine assignment is hit by a meteor, the astronauts find themselves condemned to a lingering death in an airless craft. The devastating effect this has on the once-friendly crew members is shown using plenty of nerve-jangling shocks and suspenseful surprise, and there's a completely unexpected resolution. Tautly and teasingly directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman, this is an efficient, no-nonsense exercise in chilling claustrophobia and fragmented fear.
