Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Director Robert Mulligan's feature film debut is a harrowing and intense biopic of Boston Red Sox baseball star Jim Piersall. Anthony Perkins movingly conveys Piersall's breakdown, as the sportsman begins to crack under the pressure applied by his overly ambitious father (Karl Malden). This is a touching and tragic tale, beautifully photographed in stunning black-and-white VistaVision by Haskell Boggs, and featuring a fine early score from Elmer Bernstein. This first movie from the director/producer partnership of Mulligan and Alan J Pakula would be responsible for a series of remarkable movies (including To Kill a Mockingbird) before Pakula himself moved into directing.
