Our Score
Director Yoshiaki Kawajiri - best known for futuristic tales like Lensman and Wicked City - mined Japan's feudal past for this pacey period adventure. The hero is a wandering ninja who's persuaded to ally himself with a crafty old spy (who has a passing resemblance to Gollum) and a tortured female warrior to get to the bottom of a plague that's destroyed an entire village. Of course, there's more to the epidemic than meets the eye and the makeshift trio soon have their mettle tested by the Eight Devils of Kimon, demonic adversaries with deadly supernatural powers (a giant with rock-hard skin, a seductress with living tattoos, a dwarf with a hornet's nest in his back, to name but three). Those weaned on the brilliant animes of Hayao Miyazaki may be a little underwhelmed by the old-school style animation, but this no-nonsense quest movie is chock-full of bloody slice-and-dice action, suitably grotesque villains and life-and-death confrontations (as well as decent dubbing for this English-language version) that more than compensate.

Summary
