Our Score
A brave, interesting at times, yet hugely discomforting modern-day Candide, this experimental attempt at the cinema of the grotesque by director Rolf De Heer will not be to everyone's taste. It's the grim and controversial story of an imprisoned, abused childlike 35-year-old who has never encountered another human being other than his mother and what happens when the outside world finally crashes in on his squalid existence. Using differing cinematic styles to relate each of Bubby's peculiar adventures, De Heer lets the viewer feel some of Bubby's disorientation, and the climax where he accidentally becomes a third-rate rock band's lead singer is perfectly in tune with the rest of this strange film's quirky underground tone. Hugely effective at best, irritating and shocking at worst, you won't ever have seen anything quite like this one.
