Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Writer/director Eva Riley's touching debut follows Brighton teen Leigh (Frankie Box), a talented gymnast grieving the death of her mother. Outside of practice, she's lost and alone, laughed at by the other girls and let down by her useless father (William Ash). So when her half-brother Joe (Alfie Deegan) turns up, she's soon drawn into his world of soft drugs and stolen motorbikes. Although Leigh is initially a shy, combative character, Riley's inclusive film-making style keeps us close by her side, so that the little acts of kindness and cruelty she experiences feel magnified. This yields some lovely scenes such as when Leigh and Joe race through a sprawling, sunlit field like carefree children. Elsewhere, the script seems a little underdeveloped, particularly as regards their credulity-stretching career as bike robbers. If it's aiming to be Billy Elliot as directed by Shane Meadows, Perfect 10 falls short. But what emerges is sweet if slight, overcoming its awkward moments with that rarest of qualities: empathy.
