Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The story of Asta Philpot, a Leeds man with a disability who visited a brothel in Spain to lose his virginity, spawned a BBC documentary, For One Night Only, and a Belgian film, Hasta la Vista - Come as You Are. This remake puts an American spin on the story, with Grant Rosenmeyer as Scotty, a prickly paraplegic who enlists two other men - one legally blind, the other a wheelchair user - to join him on a trip from Colorado to a specialised brothel in Montreal. While some may find the casting of able-bodied actors (all excellent) as the three lead characters problematic, the film is empathetic, generous, and sincere in its aim of making us see the person before the disability. Erik Linthorst's clever script uses humour to illuminate the frustrations caused by the men's conditions and the infantilising attitudes of people around them, and offers a bracingly frank approach to the issue of disability and sex. Though not perfect, this warm-hearted tale of friendship and shared humanity is a fun ride worth taking.
