Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Having cornered the market in costume dramas, Gainsborough had a tilt at period musicals with this passable imitation of glossy Fox fripperies like Tin Pan Alley. Unfortunately, Michael Rennie is too stolid to convince as a tunesmith stomping the streets of fin de siècle London to find a publisher for his ditties. More at home, however, are Garry Marsh, as an unscrupulous sheet music pirate, and Margaret Lockwood, as the blowsy music hall star who helps Rennie smash a system that made profits for everyone but the songwriters themselves. Val Guest directs with brio, but the songs he's saddled with are decidedly second-rate.
