The Hound of the Baskervilles

The Hound of the Baskervilles

Paul Morrissey (1977)

A Certificate

Our Score
Andy Warhol's one-time collaborator Paul Morrissey directed this woeful lampoon of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most celebrated story. In addition to scripting duties, Peter Cook also takes on the role of Baker Street's finest, while Dudley Moore doubles up as the doggedly dim Watson and Holmes's mother. Never did the duo look so bereft of inspiration, however, as they watch gag after gag fall flat, despite the ministrations of such comic geniuses as Spike Milligan, Kenneth Williams and Terry-Thomas. Morrissey is a notoriously unpredictable director, but in this case it's the shoddy screenplay, co-written by Morrissey, Cook and Moore, that is to blame.
