Summary

In a sequel of sorts to Purple Rain, the artist formerly known as Prince struggles musically with Morris Day for control of the nightclub that the two co-own in this dramatic musical fantasy.

Review

After Purple Rain, this is the best film from the artist who was still then known as Prince. Not surprising, really, because it's a sequel of sorts, which finds him once again basically playing Prince, aka the Kid. His old adversary from Purple Rain, Morris Day, and his band the Times return - this time they are warring nightclub owners - and once again steal the show. But despite an impressive array of musical talent (Mavis Staples, George Clinton), the tunes aren't quite as memorable this time around and, as a film director, Prince remains a brilliant musician.
