Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Dysfunctional families are a horror staple but few are as twisted as the one in this controversial shocker by horror stalwart Lucky McKee. Labelled as both a misogynistic outrage and a dark, feminist satire, the thought-provoking sequel to 2009's Offspring sees an outwardly upstanding lawyer (a gleefully vile Sean Bridgers) capture the sole survivor of a feral clan in backwoods America and then force his psychologically damaged wife and kids to help "civilise" her. It's challenging watching "the woman" (a returning Pollyanna McIntosh) suffer intense abuse, but what hits hardest is the appalling impact the father's actions have on his brood. Irony-laden dialogue and an incongruous alt-rock soundtrack add upbeat contrast to heighten viewer discomfort, as McKee and his co-writer, novelist Jack Ketchum, take the bitty and occasionally sluggish narrative from matter-of-fact realism to all-out nastiness. Only the strong-stomached will make it to this predictable turn, but, nonetheless, there's grim satisfaction to be had from the gore-drenched revenge finale.
