Our Score
In this Oscar-winning period drama, Max von Sydow gives a towering performance as the elderly Swede who emigrates to Denmark in the early 20th century with his son Pelle (played by Pelle Hvenegaard) to seek employment. Hvenegaard is also outstanding as the youngster who must grow up quickly when his father finds work on a farm. Director Bille August's adaptation of the first part of Nobel Prize winner Martin Andersen Nexo's four-volume novel is genuine life-affirming drama. So many strands of conflict are unravelled that it's occasionally hard to keep track, but the power of the acting (von Sydow was Oscar nominated) and the dialogue will keep you gripped. As well as the Academy Award for best foreign film, Pelle also received the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
