Our Score
The charismatic John Garfield, nearing the end of a career destroyed by the McCarthy blacklist, stars in this sombre political drama set in the early 1930s and well-directed by John Huston. Garfield plays a Cuban-born American who returns to the country of his birth to help with a revolutionary group's elaborate plan to assassinate some government ministers. Things don't go according to plan, but it doesn't stop our hero taking time out for an obligatory romance (with Jennifer Jones). Even though it dissipates its serious political theme with too much mechanical detail, the film is still tense and atmospheric.
