Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

British veteran Ronald Neame's penultimate picture was produced by Paul Heller and Martha Scott and adapted by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E Lee from their own stage play. Consequently, there is far too much chat, even for a courtroom movie, but, if you plan your tea breaks for the segments in which the American political and legal systems are discussed, it's quite a likeable romantic comedy of sorts. Jill Clayburgh does a sterling job as the first female Supreme Court judge, whose strict principles alienate and then attract shabby liberal colleague Walter Matthau. The leads make better adversaries than possible partners and their jousting alone sustains the interest.
