Phantom Lady

Our Score
This is one of the high points of film noir. Based on a Cornell Woolrich novel (written under the pseudonym William Irish), it's about a businessman (Alan Curtis) accused of strangling his wife and the search for the woman - the phantom lady - who can give him an alibi and save him from the electric chair. Leading the search is Curtis's loyal secretary (Ella Raines), a policeman who believes in his innocence and his best friend (Franchot Tone), an artist whose obsession with his own hands gives everyone the creeps. Here the plot spins into spirals of cross and double-cross, all deliriously decked out by director Robert Siodmak with a dizzying array of camera angles, light and shadows.
