A star rating of 4 out of 5.

With his mean looks and tattoo-covered body, Danny Trejo has earned a reputation as the go-to Latino tough guy in movies. And, as this revealing documentary illustrates, it's not just an act. Trejo followed in his uncle's footsteps and got into hard drugs and armed robbery before he hit his teens, earning himself spells in California's toughest prisons. But following his release, Trejo devoted himself to counselling others, which he continues to do to this day. The 1985 film Runaway Train changed the course of Trejo's life again, giving him his acting break. And from supporting roles in Heat and Desperado to taking the lead in Machete, he's never been out of work. Trejo leaves it to his family and fellow actors (Michelle Rodriguez and Cheech Marin among them) to sing his praises, while he reels off one eyebrow-raising anecdote after another like a pro. How The Wizard of Oz and the Beatles' Hey Jude brought about his salvation are among the more surprising revelations, but it's Trejo's continued efforts to support those in the direst of straits that makes his life story so inspiring.
