Our Score
This punk love story is an authentic, uncompromising insight into the obsession of Sid Vicious, who played bass guitar for the Sex Pistols, with drug addict groupie Nancy Spungen, and their inexorable downward spiral towards death. Co-scripted by Abbe Wool and Alex Cox, it brilliantly recaptures the rage, cynicism and self-destructiveness of the late 1970s punk scene, while never setting up the rock 'n' roll lifestyle as a blissful idyll. Cox directs with an eye for the era and its absurdities, mixing gritty realism with moments of charming romance and black comedy. Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb are outstanding as the lovers whose tragic affair managed to shock even in those unshockable times. Look out for a pre-fame Courtney Love, who auditioned for the Spungen role but ended up being cast as Nancy's friend, Gretchen.
