Our Score
In this typically intense thriller from director William Friedkin, Al Pacino overacts alarmingly as the clear-eyed New York cop who leathers up and enters the gay, sadomasochistic underworld in order to track down a psychopath. Inevitably, his hormones get very confused. Drawing criticism from gay groups in America and Britain - as it was almost calculated to do - it pushes to the limit what is acceptable in a mainstream studio picture. However, while the savagery of the murders and the explicitness of the sexual practices on display are initially unsettling, they soon become numbing and, ultimately, yawn-inducing.

A New York policeman poses as a homosexual in a bid to track down a killer stalking the city's gay clubs, but finds himself increasingly drawn into the furtive subculture he encounters. Intense thriller by director William Friedkin, starring a manic Al Pacino, alongside Paul Sorvino, Karen Allen and Richard Cox.
