Our Score
Like Crash, Babel and Magnolia, this convoluted thriller throws interlinked narratives together to illustrate the enigmatic workings of fate. In the first section, Forest Whitaker plays a desperate stockbroker named Happiness, who pulls off a bank heist. In the second, Brendan Fraser's soul-searching debt collector, Pleasure, suddenly loses his supernatural ability to predict the future. Their lives intersect with a grief-stricken pop star, Sorrow (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and an emergency-room doctor, Love (Kevin Bacon), who needs a rare blood match to save an ex-girlfriend. The structure is based on the four pillars of life according to an Asian proverb, a thematic affectation that weighs proceedings down to an insufferable degree. Music-video director-turned-film-maker Jieho Lee imbues his feature debut with plenty of visual verve, yet can't make his stories individually distinctive. Meanwhile, a cringeworthy adolescent voiceover and a hammy performance from Andy Garcia as an opera-loving gangster tell us little about fate, but quite a lot about pretentious storytelling.

Four people facing crises in their lives, are all linked by their connection to a mysterious mob boss. A doctor strives to save the woman he loves, a businessman bets his life on a fixed horse race, a singer faces the end of her career and a gangster experiences psychic visions. Crime drama, starring Andy Garcia, Kevin Bacon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Forest Whitaker, Brendan Fraser, Julie Delpy and Kelly Hu.
