New York Minute
was selected to be Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's first "grown-up" movie, building on their phenomenally successful careers as child actors. While its reception was overshadowed by Mary-Kate's problems with an eating disorder, this effervescent but predictable comic adventure had little appeal beyond their loyal adolescent fans in any case. The film evidently tries to demonstrate the twin teens' very individual personalities: Mary-Kate's school-skipping rebel heads to New York to promote her rock band's demo, accompanied by her overachieving sibling, who's there to compete for a university scholarship. As chaos ensues, the duo shine thanks to spot-on timing and natural delivery - to be expected of professionals who began their career at the age of one - but the supporting performances are weak, with a particularly awful cameo by Jack Osbourne.
Summary
Twin sisters decide they have more important things to do than attend school and come up with a plan to spend a day in Manhattan. One plans to meet her favourite rock band, while the other wants to try out for an overseas college programme - but each will need the other's help to triumph over unexpected obstacles. Family comedy, starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Eugene Levy and Andy Richter.
