Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Of the trio of baseball movies that hit these shores at the end of the 1980s (the others being Bull Durham and Eight Men Out), this amiable but predictable comedy was the slightest. The story revolves around a deadbeat team led by Tom Berenger, who decide to fight back when they discover that their new boss (Margaret Whitton) is determined to see them finish bottom of the league. The misfits include short-sighted pitcher Charlie Sheen and the hopelessly vain Corbin Bernsen (from TV's LA Law), and writer/director David S Ward for the most part allows it to get by on star power alone. The sharp-eyed will spot the pre-stardom Rene Russo and Wesley Snipes, and the film was successful enough to spawn two sequels.
