If you can get your head round the idea of Julia Roberts as a ruthlessly ambitious newspaper reporter, then there's plenty to enjoy in this frivolous comedy thriller. However, it's much too long and far too deliberate to fulfil its ambition of re-creating the "rat-a-tat" screwball style that made the 1930s battle-of-the-sexes comedies such a delight. Nick Nolte is closer to the mark as the cynical hack tinkering with old columns to lighten the load, but neither the rivalry nor the romance between the stars seems particularly convincing. A touch more suspense and a lot more comedy would not have gone amiss.

A veteran Chicago newspaper journalist and his rival try to out-scoop each other while reporting a catastrophic train derailment, but end up realising that the only way to come out on top is to join forces when details of a conspiracy emerge. Romantic comedy mystery, starring Julia Roberts, Nick Nolte, Olympia Dukakis, Robert Loggia and Saul Rubinek.
