Our Score
With director Martin Scorsese's reputation founded in the genre of crime drama, it's easy to forget that his talents have also been employed to good effect in the field of black comedy. Two years after his critically admired but little-seen The King of Comedy, he conceived this brilliantly original yuppie nightmare, in which Griffin Dunne plays the angst-ridden everyman to manic perfection. In a spiralling tale of persecution and paranoia, computing consultant Dunne sees his date with unhinged Rosanna Arquette become a rollercoaster ride into urban hell. New York's SoHo district becomes a Kafkaesque labyrinth, populated by avant-garde crazies, bloodthirsty gangsters and flaky Alice in Wonderland-style headcases. It's weird, wonderful and wildly funny, and Scorsese won the best director prize at Cannes for his efforts.

A mild-mannered computer programmer breaks out of his lonely lifestyle and chooses to do something wild and crazy. He decides to visit a woman he met in a cafe, but his journey there soon takes a turn for the worse when he loses his money and is forced to endure a number of increasingly odd and menacing encounters on the seedy streets of late-night Manhattan. Martin Scorsese's black comedy, starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette, Verna Bloom and Teri Garr.
