Our Score
A key film in the Australian film renaissance of the 1970s, this sensitive story of a fiercely independent young woman with aspirations to be a writer in male-dominated late-19th-century Australia made international reputations for director Gillian Armstrong and her remarkably assured 23-year-old star, Judy Davis. With Sam Neill and Wendy Hughes providing attractive support, the one drawback is being expected to believe any woman in her right mind would turn down Neill's charming, wealthy suitor. (That said, this is based on a true story.) Armstrong's subsequent sojourn in Hollywood never yielded a film as engaging and passionately felt as this, her brilliant feature debut.

The eldest daughter of an impoverished farming family vows to become a writer despite the restraints of her strict upbringing. Period drama set in late 19th-century Australia, based on the novel by Miles Franklin, starring Judy Davis, Sam Neill, Wendy Hughes and Robert Grubb.
