Though it shares the same title and basic premise as the cheesy 1980s TV show, there's not much else that this update has in common with the series that rocketed Johnny Depp to stardom. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill play the dimwit cop duo who are sent back to high school to pose as students in order to root out a drugs ring. While the original series had pretensions to drama,
The Lego Movie
co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller play the set-up strictly for broad laughs. Buddy comedies stand or fall on the quality of the comic pairing, and while Jonah Hill is certainly a lot of fun as the needy nerd, it's pin-up Channing Tatum who really shines as the jock cop who believes that arrested criminals should be informed that they "have the right to be an attorney". There are also some hilarious jokes about how Tatum looks far too old to be in high school - not that it did any harm to Depp, who pays back the favour by appearing in a cameo.
Summary
Cops Schmidt and Jenko hated each other when they were at school together, but have grown up to become friends. They are forced to relive the horrors of their adolescence when their captain decides their youthful appearance makes them the perfect undercover agents to crack a high-school drug ring. Comedy inspired by the 1980s TV series, with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
