Our Score
The winner of the Golden Lion at Venice, this epic of intimate details puts a human face on the momentous events that buffeted Taiwan between the Japanese surrender in 1945 and the arrival of Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalists four years later. There's a sense of microcosm about the deteriorating widower's household, with one son working as a translator during the occupation, another a deaf mute fighting for independence, the third a petty gangster and the fourth a soldier presumed killed in action. But background knowledge is inessential, as Hou Hsiao-Hsien's subtle compositions and meticulous pacing draw the viewer into the heart of the drama.
