Our Score
The chief delight in this shamelessly overwrought but sporadically entertaining thriller is watching two of Hollywood's finest actors dally with material obviously beneath them and fashion it into something above the routine. Kevin Costner (beautifully cast both to and against type) is Earl Brooks, a respected businessman who is attempting to give up a secret addiction - namely, to random murder. But his alter ego (a lightly sinister William Hurt) slyly coaxes him into further slaughter. Events are further complicated by a blackmailer who wants not cash for his silence, but to join in the bloody mayhem for kicks. It all spins off the rails in the last act, a second serial killer is introduced for no apparent reason other than to deliver a climactic shoot-out, and Demi Moore is shriekingly irritating as a Clarice Starling-style detective. However, the atmosphere of macabre playfulness and a few effective twists and shocks are enough to make it worth suspending your disbelief.

Seemingly respectable businessman Earl Brooks tries to lead a normal life with his family - but the problem is his imaginary friend Marshall, who goads him into committing a series of brutal murders. As Brooks tries to wrest control and end the killings, he also has to contend with a blackmailer, who catches him in the act, and a tenacious detective who is close to discovering the truth. Thriller, with Kevin Costner, William Hurt and Demi Moore.
