Mystery abounds when a boy wakes up on an island and is pursued by a menacing hulk in the animated feature debut of Latvian director Gints Zilbalodis. Expanding on the "overcoming the odds" theme from his previous animated shorts, Zilbalodis conjures up an enthralling if unsettling odyssey for his young protagonist, who uses a map and a motorbike to traverse an ever-changing landscape (jungle oasis, mirror lake, barren wilderness), encountering friendly fauna along the way. Minimalist in design and dialogue-free, this mesmerising adventure recalls the exploits of the shipwrecked castaway in The Red Turtle (2016), as well as emulating that film's emotionally immersive experience. Zilbalodis, who also created the movie's mood-setting soundscape, is undoubtedly a talent to watch.
