Judgement Deferred

John Baxter (1951)

A Certificate

Our Score
John Baxter forged a reputation in the early 1930s for social dramas and comedies notable for their sure grasp of character and locale. The film that launched the ill-fated Group 3 company, this is a remake of Baxter's own 1933 feature Dosshouse, much admired in its day for its gritty approach to poverty at a time when most producers were churning out glib escapism. However, the intervening 18 years evidently took their toll on Baxter, who, apart from some nice shots of Dorset, here manages only to fashion a muddled, maudlin melodrama that feels like substandard Frank Capra done by amateur theatricals.
