Our Score
In addition to scripting the majority of his pictures, Bengali director Satyajit Ray also regularly composed the soundtracks. Few films better showcased his command of Indian music than this poignant tale of an aristocrat who spends everything he has on a concert to serenade a passing age. There is much to admire in Chhabi Biswas's mournful performance and the way in which Ray maintains the delicate balance between progress and decay. But you really need an ear for Indian classical music to fully appreciate this, Ray's fourth feature, which lacks the cohesion of his best work.
