Summary

A British housewife's settled existence is thrown into upheaval by the outbreak of the Second World War, as her husband and eldest son are called up and her small town is devastated by bombing. She spiritedly tries to make the best of things, looking after local children, watching over her youngest son's love life and capturing an enemy airman. Drama based on Jan Struther's book, starring an Oscar-winning Greer Garson, with Walter Pidgeon.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This superb wartime melodrama was "more valuable than the combined efforts of six army divisions", according to Winston Churchill. Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon play the ordinary British couple suffering in the Second World War, bringing this country's plight to the American public, and today this MGM production is best viewed in that propagandist light. The film won six Oscars, including best picture, best actress and best direction for William Wyler, and it's easy to understand why. A sequel, The Miniver Story, filmed in England eight years later, isn't nearly as good.
