Our Score
by
Tom Hutchinson
This animated version of the Victor Hugo classic is one of the best of the 1990s Disney movies. As with previous versions, it's the tale of Quasimodo, the deformed keeper of the Notre Dame bells, and his unrequited love for Esmeralda, a gypsy whose actions lead to her persecution. It's darker and more adult than previous Disney animations, but there's still room for three mischievous and mobile gargoyles - Victor, Hugo and Laverne. Tom Hulce, Demi Moore and Kevin Kline provide voices to match the poignancy of the drama. The songs aren't bad, too, and the score by Alan Mencken and Stephen Schwartz (who went on to write the hit musical
Wicked
) was Oscar-nominated.
Summary
A deformed bell-ringer living reclusively in a cathedral in the heart of medieval Paris is tempted out of seclusion when a gypsy festival arrives and captures his imagination. Here in the outside world, he learns the cruel government minister who raised him is hatching a plan to wipe out the gypsies, so he resolves to protect his new friends. Disney animation, with the voices of Tom Hulce, Demi Moore and Kevin Kline.
