Our Score
Kellie Martin is a veteran of dozens of TV movies, yet she's probably best known in this country for her role as Lucy Knight in ER. Here she gives a sensitive but never mawkish performance in this engrossing drama about a deaf mute teenager, whose years of abuse and neglect are ended by the caring social worker who teaches her sign language. Also known as Breaking Through, director Fred Gerber's movie clearly takes its inspiration from The Miracle Worker, the 1962 biopic of Helen Keller and her remarkable teacher, Annie Sullivan. Martin and JoBeth Williams can't match Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft, but they still manage to convey conviction and sincerity.
