Our Score
When the Smurfs hit New York City, New York City can't hit back. These little blue creatures just "three apples high" have been charming - and sickening - children and adults since they were dreamt up by Belgian cartoonist Peyo in 1958. They went from cartoon to TV franchise, and now they're in a feature-length 3D film starring Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays as soon-to-be parents who find themselves protectors of a band of Smurfs fleeing from the evil magician Gargamel (Hank Azaria) in modern-day New York. Although adults will find it barely entertaining (even with one rather inappropriate Marilyn Monroe allusion), children will love the little blue folk who are named after their character traits (why there is only one female Smurf is explained). Extra points go to Harris, who brings a comedic grace akin to that of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins to his otherwise banal role. Points also go to those who pick out the grandfatherly tones of Hollywood legend Jonathan Winters voicing Papa Smurf.

Summary

The tiny blue forest-dwelling creatures flee from an evil wizard, only to end up magically transported to modern-day New York. They search for a way to get back to their own village while evading their enemy, who has followed them to the Big Apple. Fantasy comedy, with Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Jayma Mays, plus voices of Jonathan Winters and Katy Perry.
