Review

One of the problems of making a film about recent events is that the screenwriter has to tiptoe around the sensibilities of extant characters. Moreover, at such a short remove, the truth is never fully known. Consequently, this worthy TV movie can only tell part of the story of how Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk jointly earned the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in bringing about democracy in South Africa. As the ANC leader who is thrust back into the limelight after 27 years' imprisonment, Sidney Poitier has the requisite dignity and determination. But Michael Caine's Afrikaaner president is the more grounded performance.
