Our Score
The 1984 hit teen movie may not have needed the remake treatment, but Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer's update is nowhere near as bad as expected. Kenny Wormald nimbly steps into Kevin Bacon's iconic shoes as Ren MacCormack, a city boy who relocates to a southern town where dancing has been outlawed by the community leaders. MacCormack's drive to get the ban overturned sees him fall foul of the stern Reverend Moore (Dennis Quaid), while falling in love with his conflicted daughter (Julianne Hough). Fans of the original film's songs (including Holding Out for a Hero and the toe-tapping main theme) will find them spruced up here, while the eye-catching visuals and break- and country-line dancing give it all a refreshing feel. Brewer, who collaborated on the script with original writer Dean Pitchford, hasn't really improved the plot or overcome its core silliness, but that doesn't detract from this being surprisingly sweet and engaging.

A teenager from Boston moves to a small conservative town, and discovers the council and a preacher have enforced a ban on loud music and dancing. He openly defies the harsh rules, revitalising the local youth and winning the heart of the reverend's daughter. Musical remake, with Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough and Dennis Quaid.
