Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Director George A Romero redefined the meaning of horror for fear-sated audiences in the 1960s with this seminal classic. It starts suddenly, without rhyme or reason, with a jolting attack in a cemetery and continues on a relentless downward spiral of frantic despair as terrified people take fragile shelter in a secluded house to fight off an army of cannibalistic zombies. Conveying visceral terror through an unrelieved black-and-white documentary atmosphere, Romero's graphic cult chiller no longer scares the daylights out of viewers because of its countless imitations. But the director's radical style, lethal wit and political themes still impress.
