A mysterious woman takes a job as nanny to a 10-year-old boy who believes she is a murderess - with good reason. Hammer thriller, starring Bette Davis, William Dix, Wendy Craig, Maurice Denham and Pamela Franklin.
The first of two movies Bette Davis made for Britain's Hammer films - the other was 1968's The Anniversary - this is a genuinely chilling horror tale, with a clever plot written by Hammer regular Jimmy Sangster from an Evelyn Piper novel. However, movie purists may well object to the fact that the flashbacks reveal incidents that never actually happened, completely undermining and consequently manipulating the expectations of the audience - compare Hitchcock's Stage Fright. Despite valiant work from Davis and director Seth Holt, the narrative weaknesses and the general unpleasantness of the piece may spoil what could have been an interesting addition to the genre.
